Meet Julie King – Founder of Bonailie

Julie King has had tourism in her DNA from a young age, now she is striving to reshape the industry that she loves.

People who choose a career in travel and tourism have a deep-seated yearning for discovery. A career in tourism can literally open up the world to you, expose you to vastly different cultures and deliver rich experiences that will shape your life.

Tourism is a diverse industry which offers a range of exciting career opportunities. For Julie, it started at the age of 15 and led her through an exciting career in Scotland, Dubai and Australia.

Julie has accumulated over 34 years of international success, working within and consulting to hundreds of hospitality and tourism organisations across 36 countries. Julie’s experience has ranged from working in luxury hotels in Scotland and Dubai, managing consultancies in Dubai and more than ten years of global tourism advisory and representation based in Australia.

Over the years, Julie has developed a holistic view of the most significant areas of growth and change in international tourism.

Last week, Julie announced the launch of her second business, Bonailie. With a huge vision, this global initiative aims to shape the future of tourism by bringing industry decision makers together, across all sectors, onto a collaborative platform that will drive 21st century thinking.

‘The Covid-19 pandemic has given us the time to reflect, re-envisage and address the many global challenges that tourism was already facing prior to the pandemic. Many sectors of the industry were working in silo and the need for global collaboration is paramount.’

Julie announced the launch of Bonailie to the industry with her press release communication which outlines the vision to shape the future of tourism.

Julie has made many strong connections and relationships throughout her career, but for those who have not yet been acquainted with Julie, the following Q&A will help you get to know Julie and what has driven her to where she is today:

Tell us about your first job in the industry?

My first full time role was as a Floor Housekeeper in St Andrews Old Course Hotel, a luxury 5 Star Hotel in Scotland. Prior to that and during college, I worked in kitchens, banqueting, restaurants and housekeeping. Starting from the ground up was a great way to build a solid foundation and gave me a good perspective on the industry as a whole.

What have you enjoyed most about working in the industry?

Working in tourism has given me the opportunity to work with many diverse cultures, travel and work in 4 countries and be part of many exciting and innovative projects. But, most of all, it is the people and connections that make the industry so special. The tourism industry is very connected and collaborative which makes it a global force of passionate professionals.

What was the most challenging part of your role to date?

While the tourism industry has been hit with it’s fair share of challenges (from the Gulf war, to industrial strikes, 9/11, SARS and catastrophic environmental events) without a doubt, COVID-19 pandemic has brought the industry to its knees. Seeing so many of our clients, industry peers and friends going through such tough times, and watching businesses come to a grinding halt as a result has been difficult.

The greatest challenge for me to date, has been finding a way to navigate out of this and my goal is to bring as many of our industry partners and peers with us on the journey.

In this time of reflection we realised that things needed to change. We need to reshape the industry into one that is sustainable, for the economy, our businesses and the planet and as a result Bonailie was born.

We had one clear goal – to bring the tourism industry together, united with a common purpose – to shape the future of tourism.

Where did the inspiration for the name of your new business come from ?

The name Bonailie was inspired by the Scottish word meaning: Wishing a prosperous journey: This is the way to go. A bonailie is a very cheery parting. The word Bonailie is derived from French ‘bon’ meaning good and ‘aller’ to go.

I am excited to start this journey and to collaborate with the industry at a global level to achieve a new era driven by purpose and focused on 21st century thinking.

What is your favourite destination to travel to and why?

I have been lucky enough to travel far and wide throughout the course of my career and it has shaped the person I am today. It is hard for me to choose a favourite, and I’ve always loved to explore new destinations each year.

A destination that allows me to completely relax and switch off is the stunning Seychelles Islands.

I love South Africa and have spent a lot of time there over the last 20 years. The diversity of the destination from the incredible safari experiences to the winelands, garden route, art, culture, food and stunning landscapes makes it an experience not to be missed.

Dubai is a favourite to visit for me as having lived there for 14 years, I love that there is always somewhere new to discover and it feels like a new destination every time you visit.

Scotland, my hometown which has some of the most breathtaking scenery and the nicest people and Italy where I have spent a lot of time and I also was married there in 2011.

I believe I will always travel and explore the world, which is why I want to make sure we steer the industry on a sustainable path forward. I believe the desire for people to travel will always be there, we now need to ensure it is safe, so people regain their confidence.

How does the industry get involved with Bonailie?

Tomorrow evening (Wednesday, 14 October at 6pm AEST) is the kickoff webinar for the 10 part series which Julie will be hosting as a launch gift to the industry. These webinars will focus on recovery and what businesses can be doing to prepare to come out of recession. It will also focus on 21st century thinking and moving the industry forward with purpose.

If you have not already registered for the series, you can do so here

We look forward to sharing this journey globally and working together to shape the future of tourism.

“As an industry we weren’t solving the problems that really mattered. We were disconnected from each other and not leading the way.”
